Author: Michael Connelly

Genre: Detective Fiction

Rating: ***** (5 stars)

Summary:

Terry McCaleb is a former FBI agent, forced to retire by heart disease. While recovering from his heart transplant he is restoring and living on his deceased father’s boat in Long Beach, California.

One day, Terry is visited by a woman who introduces herself as the sister of the woman whose heart now beats in Terry’s chest. Her sister was shot in a convenience store robbery that was never solved, and the surviving sister asks Terry to look into it. Although he is ill, retired, and has no official standing, Terry agrees over his doctor’s objections.

As McCaleb investigates, he finds disturbing evidence that leads him to believe that the donor was not a chance victim, as originally thought, but one of several victims of a serial killer. Even more unsettling is the fact that the three victims were all organ donors with the same extremely rare blood type, apparently killed so their organs would benefit someone on the transplant list. Additionally, McCaleb discovers connections to his past as an FBI profiler.

My Thoughts:

Blood Work is one of my favorite Michael Connelly novels. The story is both interesting and convincing, and he surprises the reader with masterful plot twists.

Potentially Offensive Content:

Profanity, violence, sexual content, disturbing images.
