Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Rating: ****(4 Stars – as rated by Mrs. Sneakyreader)

Summary:

Seth and Kendra are spending time at their grandparents farm, Fablehaven.  While there, they are given a set of strict rules.  Seth becomes curious, and ventures into the nearby forest without permission, where he begins to learn about the magical creatures that inhabit the forest.

The children find out that their grandfather is the caretaker of the magical forest and is tasked with maintaining the balance of good and evil among the creatures who live there.

As Kendra and Seth explore, they accidentally break a protective spell, and their grandfather is abducted by mysterious creatures.  Seth and Kendra must rescue him and restore the balance of power at Fablehaven.

Mrs. Sneakyreader’s Opinion:

I loved Fablehaven.  It is imaginative, humorous, and filled with unexpected plot twists.  I thought the children were unnecessarily rude to each other at times, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying the story.

Potentially Offensive Content:

None.

    Um…Mrs.Sneakyreader? What you call unnecessary rudeness between the siblings shouldn’t take away from your enjoyment of the story. That ‘unnecessary rudeness’ is called ‘normal sibling behavior’. I would say these are ‘realistic confrontations’ between children and that Brandon Mull did a great job of showing what real children are like.

    @Kendra,

    Thanks for your comment. It sounds like you and I might disagree on what constitutes rudeness vs. normal sibling behavior. That’s probably the result of our respective home environments during childhood. My parents didn’t allow my siblings and I to talk to each other the way the kids in Fablehaven do. As a result, I grew up thinking such behavior was rude. It sounds like your childhood environment may have been more lenient, so you grew up with a different perspective.

    As I said, the children’s behavior didn’t stop me from enjoying the story; I just thought it was rude. :)
